Developing a green roads toolkit & guidance for ADB projects
Guiding towards sustainable road projects of the ADB
The ADB Green Roads Toolkit is a comprehensive, user-friendly Excel-based tool developed by the Asian Development Bank in collaboration with GOPA MetaMeta and the International Road Federation. It brings together more than 150 best practices for sustainable road development, organized across nine key dimensions: decarbonization, climate resilience, water and land management, pollution reduction, quality of life, biodiversity conservation, disaster preparedness, sustainable materials sourcing, and inclusive growth. The Toolkit has been piloted in Tajikistan and Maharashtra, India, where it supported the identification of climate vulnerabilities, highlighted social and environmental co-benefits, and guided the selection of priority green road practices tailored to each project. It has also been presented internationally, used to document best practices, and is increasingly supporting integration of green approaches into national road programs.
