Promoting Rural Development in Northern Uganda

The overall objectives of the project are:

  • To facilitate the strengthening of the technical and local capacities of smallholder farms and their organizations to address yield gaps and adopt agroecological practices for climate smart farming and sustainable use of natural resources.
  • To improve the competitiveness of 570 agro-based MSMEs through the supply of nonfinancial and financial services and promotion of inclusive market led models for green products.

Tasks of the expert

  • Support the team leader in managing and implementing all key outputs of this tender related to improved resilience of small holder farms.
  • Conceptual and technical support to facilitate addressing yield gaps in small holder farms, issues related to low-emissions agriculture and food systems, ensuring that 14,000 smallholder farms and agribusinesses have adopted economic, agroecological and climate smart practices to improve resilience to climate change, economic viability, and environmental sustainability of their farming systems.
  • Conceptual and technical support for business modelling, new technologies, innovations, approaches, including extension approaches related to seed systems strengthening especially for LSBs. Institutionalizing and nurturing of LSBs and promote increased demand and supply of QDS including appropriate linkages. Promotion of crop varieties suited for various climates and environments, along with climate-smart and agroecological technological practices.
  • Through the various interventions stated above (and in collaboration with the interventions in other output areas) contribute to the creation of 9,000 additional jobs, focusing on women and youth and ensure increased resilience of farming systems to external shocks for 11,500 smallholder farmers.
  • Liaise across output areas, work packages and partners to accelerate innovations in climate change, shea conservation, agrotourism, charcoal farming to promote green jobs amongst women and youth in the agri-food systems.
  • Ensuring quality implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project activities in accordance with deadlines.
Qualifications: 
  • University degree (Master or graduate diploma) in project management, business administration, Development Economics, International studies, or related field.
  • 8 years of professional experience in the Rural Development, Agriculture sector and in both cases, the expert must have been working with smallholder farmers.
  • 5 years of professional experience in climate smart and agroecological farming practices, local seed systems strengthening, integrated water resources management, or natural resources conservation.
  • 1 year of professional experience in East African
  • 5 years of professional experience working in Northern Uganda.
