The consortium of AFC Agriculture and Finance Consultants, the Academy of German Cooperatives (ADG) and INTEGRATION was recently awarded an extension contract (additional EUR 4.7 million, adding up to a total of EUR 9.3 million) funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support financial institutions in East and Central Africa. Beyond the initial project countries Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, it has been proposed to expand the number of eligible target countries to a total of 15, including Burundi, Comoros, Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cameroon, Djibouti, Eritrea, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and South Sudan. The technical assistance (TA) project extension will however focus on the well-established core markets of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, and to a lesser extent, the DRC. With the addition of new countries and financial institutions participating, the number of active partner institutions is projected to almost double from 21 to at least 41 during the extension phase.

The second phase of the TA programme focuses on the following key topics:

  • Continuous support in bank’s core areas (e.g. risk management, product development and marketing)
  • Agricultural and value chain finance; potentially also agro insurance
  • Digitization and agency banking
  • Knowledge management/ IT platforms
  • Environmental and social risk management
  • Training of trainers/ internal training capacity/ improvement of HR departments

This will be achieved, on the one hand, through a professional and very experienced long-term team of five experts in four project offices and, on the other hand, through close cooperation with EIB HQ in Luxembourg, EIB’s regional office in Nairobi and EIB’s partner institutions.

AFC and its partners are looking forward to continuing this successful TA programme and to working closely with EIB and its partners over the next few years.
