AFC and its mother company GOPA, support Colombia in the implementation of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) through a project financed by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The NDC are non-binding national plans highlighting climate actions which governments aim to implement in response to climate change, as a contribution to achieve the global targets set out in the Paris Agreement. Agriculture is one of the sectors included in Colombia's NDCs for the implementation of relevant climate mitigation and/or adaptation measures.

The GIZ program supports Colombian partners in the definition, planning, coordination, implementation and monitoring of the corresponding pilot measures. This program focuses on specific value chains and regions, namely corn in the department of Córdoba and dual purpose livestock (dairy and meat) in the department of Sucre. The value chain approach offers the opportunity to apply relevant measures for climate mitigation and/or adaptation not only at the production level, but also in the upstream and downstream stages, such as input production, transport and storage, as well as the processing stage.

The measures implemented include:

  • crop rotation,
  • optimization of nutrient management in soils in the maize value chain,
  • the implementation of improved pastures, scattered trees in paddocks,
  • intensive silvo-pastoral systems for the meat and
  • dairy value chain.

Apart from this support to private value chain operators, the project facilitates the integration of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures into local and regional policies and their planning instruments, including staff training.

The project started in midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in October 2019 and will run until December 2022.
